Nana’s House: Conteur’s First Original Care Sector Children’s Book

Conteur is thrilled to announce the launch of its first original care sector children’s book; ‘Nanas House’.

We are delighted to be able to share this passion project with the health and social care community, as well as thousands of families, as a valuable resource to support them through the transition of a loved one moving into a care home.

In celebration of its official launch, we are sharing a glimpse into the origins of our care sector children’s book; ‘Nana’s House’.

How it all began

At Conteur, we’re passionate about helping those whose voices are unheard or unrecognised to tell their stories creatively and impactfully.

With over 20 years of experience in the care sector, our team has been moved by thousands of incredible and inspirational stories. We decided we wanted to leverage our expertise to develop a really valuable resource for families, our clients and other care homes across the UK.

During a creative session for another campaign for National Storytelling Week, the idea of writing an original children’s book about the care sector was suggested and “Nana’s House” was born.

The story

‘Nana’s House’, which tells the story of an elderly grandparent (‘Nana’) moving into a care home through the eyes of a young child.

The story begins with cherished memories of playtime at Nana’s old house. The narrative then follows the child’s emotional journey as they learn about Nana’s new home, exploring initial fears and misconceptions, reflecting common anxieties many families experience at this time.

However, the story goes on to showcase the warm, supportive environment of modern care home life. Readers discover the dedicated and compassionate caregivers, the engaging activities residents enjoy, the fun shared with friends and family and even the delicious cake!

The story focuses on helping to alleviate some of the anxieties around this transition for children by showing all the fun and beneficial aspects of care home life.

The impact on the care sector and families

This book is designed to help children and their families navigate the transition to a loved one moving into a care home. It aims to reassure children who may be feeling unsure or anxious, showing them that care homes are warm, joyful places where loved ones are cared for and where they can continue to make happy memories together.

It also offers a valuable resource for care sector companies, supporting them in helping families through this change. It offers ways for parents to explain and show their children the positives and benefits that care home life can bring.
